Polypores contribute to nature’s cycle by feeding on decomposing forests and recycling their nutrients. A total of 32 bronze copies of polypores found on Vallisaari Island are attached to a decomposing tree in a helical spiral. The genetic information of all organisms is encoded in a similar-shaped spiral ladder molecule called a DNA sequence. The work gives a visible form to nature’s underlying mathematical and geometrical structure on a massive scale that gives it an alien appearance. It reminds us of the laws of physics and chemistry that explain the life, growth, and death of all organisms.

Nature and mathematics converge in digital artificial intelligence, which is based on mycelial-like networks resembling the interconnections between fungi. Our knowledge of the world of fungi is expanding continuously. Mushrooms are also associated with myths and superstitions, such as the belief that rubbing a bracket fungus brings good luck.
